The chateau of Brézé and its complex of subterranean chambers

An unusual chateau of the Loire valley…

Built between the 11th and 19th centuries, the Château of Brézé provides visitors with an opportunity to discover an elegant castle still inhabited to this day, as well as its extraordinary underground fortress!

Hidden beneath the château is one of the undiscovered marvels of the Loire Valley’s chateaux – a unique ensemble of chambers carved out of the rock!

A visit to this underground world is like reading a history book which has been engraved in the tuffeau.

Here you can admire the Lords of Brézé’s old fortified residence, the parapets dug out of the rock, the troglodyte drawbridge, the seigniorial cellars, the underground presses, the kitchen and its bakery, the ice store and other excavated tunnels.

This extraordinary world of rock opens out onto the deepest dry moats in Europe, which reach a depth of 18m.
